13 Miles Western Cafe: Miles away from me but worth the travel

Right beside Sembawang Shopping Centre, along the shophouses sits this homely western cafe – 13 Miles. Besides being conveniently located beside a bustling shopping centre, it is also right behind a bus stop which makes it super accessible.

13 Miles serve the most affordable western cafe food and even tastes better than some halal restaurants I’ve been to. The staff here are very friendly, who will warmly invite you into the cafe. You can choose to be seated outside or inside. The interiors just have a very cheerful and relaxed vibe, for a casual lunch or dinner with your family and friends.

For starters, they serve homemade soups like Tomato, Mushroom and Pumpkin. The soups were very flavourful and even came with 2 generous slices of crispy garlic bread.lrg_dsc02554-1Price: $5.90

This one of a kind dish is definitely a must-try when you’re there. The Miso Butter Chicken Roulette was not only juicy and tender but was even stuffed with miso butter and Japanese rice. Once sliced open, the stuffings and juices will just ooze out and was just so fragrant. It even comes with a side of tasty mash potato and sauteed vegetables. For its price, this dish is definitely value for money.

It was my first time eating a Chicken Cordon Bleu anywhere and this certainly impressed me. As a cheese lover, this was perfect for me as the chicken was stuffed with ham and cheese. Even though deep fried, the chicken was also still moist and was just so pleasant to eat. Again, for its price, there’s honestly nothing to complain about.

One of their signature dishes was the Duck Confit paired with savoury brown sauce. The size of the duck was just so generous and so flavourful. The meat just fell off the bone and was served with mash potatoes and sauteed vegetables too.

You can probably find this dish at any western cafe or restaurant, but the Sirloin Steak was seasoned and done so well. An interesting factor was that you can choose from a huge range of sauces to go with this steak. Choose from sauces like black pepper, mushroom, salted egg, BBQ, chilli crab, mongolian, brown, onion, mushroom cream or hollandaise.

Another recommended dish is the Tom Yum Pasta for spice lovers! You can choose to have seafood tom yum or chicken tom yum, but we choose seafood as we felt it pairs better. The tom yum sauce was rich and aromatic, with quite a kick of spice. They also serve many other pasta dishes as seen below in the menu and the prices range from only $8 to $11.90, which is so pocket-friendly compared to other expensive restaurants.lrg_dsc02595-1Price: $9.50

If you’re looking for a healthier option, give their Herb Crusted Salmon a try. Seasoned with herbs like parsley, the salmon was so smooth and flaky. It sits on a portion of mash potato and sauteed vegetables too, and to top it all off is drizzled with a sour lemon butter sauce.

Moving on to my favourite part of a meal, they serve 4 dessert options. The Apple Crumble served here is homemade and we chose to add a scoop of ice cream to it, because who doesn’t love ice cream with their dessert. Definitely for the sweet tooth as this dish comprised of sweet apples, raisins, and a sweet crumble on top.lrg_dsc02606-1Price: $8.90

I’ve never really had anything like their Baked Butter Pudding here, which was also another homemade dish. This had sort of like a firm cake texture but still soft, and this came with a scoop of ice cream, plus points!lrg_dsc02603-1Price: $7.90

Overall, this place is definitely super wallet-friendly yet tastes so restaurant worthy. This cafe is also in the process of being halal certified which is great for our Muslim friends out there, so do pay it a visit and support our homegrown cafes.
