Review on CNY Buffet 2019: The Square Restaurant @ Novotel Clark Quay Singapore

Starting 15th January, Novotel will be serving Chinese New Year items in their buffet spread. Besides their festive buffet dishes, their popular buffet items like their signature laksa, chilli/ pepper/ salted egg crab, salted egg crayfish, A-la minute risotto, durian pengat, etc remain.

Of course, what is Chinese New Year without Yu Sheng? Toss the Prosperity Yu Sheng (6pax $68++/ 8pax $88++) here at Novotel with your family and friends. Their homemade yuzu sauce made the yu sheng really light and refreshing, which is perfect before you start feasting at the buffet. The picture below is the 8 pax Yu Sheng with the Novotel logo on it.

Here are the CNY buffet items that will be included in the buffet and a short review:

  1. Trio Prosperity Platter – Roast Chicken, Roast Duck, Pork Belly (Taste: 4/5)
The chicken was really soft and moist, the duck went really well with the duck sauce and the pork belly was flavourful with crispy skin.
  2. Poached Broccoli with Dried Oyster and Black Moss (Taste: 3/5)
I was not a fan of this dish as the taste of oyster was really overwhelming as the sauce also had an oyster smell. However, if you’re a fan of oysters, you would really love this.

  3. Trio Cold Cut Platter (Taste: 3/5)
  4. Fresh Water Garoupa Hong Kong Style (Taste: 3.5/5)
I enjoyed the sauce of the hong kong style steamed fish and it was steamed well too.

  5. Kyoko Square Ribs (Taste: 2.5/5)
The ribs were really tough but the sweet sauce on it was pretty good.

  6. Braised Pork (Taste: 3/5)
Pretty tender as it was braised.

  7. Chicken Bak Kua (Taste: 4/5)
This was not made in house but it was one of my favourites here actually!
  8. Pineapple Tarts (Taste: 2.5/5)
These were really cute to look at but the crust was not baked well nor was it flavourful. When I took a bite into it, all the crust fell off the pineapple filling.
  9. Kueh Bahlu (Taste: 3/5)
    They were quite dense.

  10. Fish Nian Gao (Taste: 3/5)
These were really nian gao-ed texture and tasted okay.

  11. Mini Ang Ku Kueh (Taste: 3/5)
There was actually filling in there and it surprised me as the ang ku kuehs were really tiny.

  12. Egg Tart (Taste: 3.5/5)
I would have enjoyed this more if it was kept hot as the pie like-crust lao hong and wasn’t as nice as it could have been.

  13. Osmanthus Jelly (Taste: 3.5/5)
Tasted good but the jelly was a little too firm for our liking.

  14. Assorted Cakes (Taste: 3/5)
The cakes were fluffy but were a tad too sweet for me.
