Common Chefs Bistro @ Sembawang: A Humble Cafe with Great Food

This cafe is totally not in my area but was so surprised (in a good way) with the food here. Hidden in a row of shophouses, Common Chefs Bistro has such a welcoming vibe that seems like a perfect place for a casual dining with your families on a weekend.

In their new menu, they have 4 new Specialty Sodas that you can give a try namely Frutti Fizz, Cloud Nine, Blossom Kiss, and Captain Passion and they are all at an affordable price of $5. Plus, this place has no GST or service charge!

Else, they do have other drinks like coffee, tea, milkshakes and others. I did try their Matcha Latte ($5) which wasn’t the best I’ve had but not the worst either.

For starters, we were recommended the Lock N’ Loaded ($12) and as a cheese lover, I really dig this dish. The deep fried grated potatoes not only had a lot of nacho cheese on it, but also bacon and onions and topped with an egg. Great for sharing!

I’ve never seen such a huge portion of Shepard’s Pie before and this was one of our favourite dishes. Underneath that thick, stretchy layer of cheese were mash potatoes, mushrooms, onions and minced pork. The mash potatoes weren’t bland at all and there was a good amount of pork in it.

Since we came here yesterday, which was on a Sunday, we decided to give the Rich Man Burger with a side of tater tots a try as they only serve this on weekends. The patty is made from Chorizo, where they take the meat from its sausage form to form a patty. It was quite salty on its own and the colour looked a bit scary as it was orange-y.  It was topped with a lot of scrambled eggs and truffle mayo, but I couldn’t really taste the truffle. Do drizzle your burger with as much of the melted cheddar sauce as you want!

If you’re looking for a vegetarian option, Go Green is the one for you! This savoury waffle dish will win you over if you love waffles as much as I do. It is a buttermilk waffle, spread with tomato salsa, and topped with mushrooms, tomatoes, mozzarella and a heap of Mesclun Salad dressed with Balsamic Vinaigrette. You do have to eat it while it’s hot as after awhile, it does become soggy and it wouldn’t be as nice anymore.

The 150 Days Grain-fed Angus Steak did it for me. We had ours done medium and it was so tender and juicy. It was not chewy at all, making it so easy to eat and the size of it was so generous. With a side of seasonal vegetables and choice of roasted garlic oil or truffle oil tossed (+$1) potatoes, this will get your mouth-watering the soon it sets foot on your table.

Ending off with desserts, the mains we had filled us up really well so we decided to just have something light. We had the Black Sesame and Salted Caramel Ice Cream ($4/scoop) which was really refreshing. They do have other standard flavours like Vanilla, Cookies & Cream and Chocolate and more unique ones like Thai Milk Tea, Earl Grey and Matcha.
